Cycling in Aalborg – Gran Fondo World Championships 2024

Updated: Aug 23

What happens when you mix a Kenyan cycling legend, two german riders, and 157 km of Danish tarmac? You get a wild weekend in Aalborg, full of fast wheels, stinky herring, and good vibes all around.

Together with Lucky Bike, David Kinjah joined our team for the 2024 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Aalborg, Denmark. The city delivered: smooth roads, cool architecture (yes, we visited the Utzon Center), and that typical Danish mix of modern design and medieval history. Also: a lot of fish.

Before the race, Kinjah gave his bike a spontaneous upgrade. Longer stem, flatter cockpit — “more aero,” he grinned. With the help of Verner from Aalborg BikeZone, he fine-tuned the setup just in time. Despite a few language barriers, everything came together. As Kinjah put it: “It’s all in the details.”

The Race

The race itself was tough fast and cold. With over 40 km/h average speeds and a tight international field, it was never going to be easy. Kinjah raced in the 50–54 age group, Dörte and the others in theirs. No one expected podiums, but everyone gave their best.

There were cramps, group splits, and a few crashes (Kinjah briefly ended up in a bush). And while we tried to hand out bottles along the route — the pace was just too high. Feeding was nearly impossible. But everyone made it across the line safely. And in the end, that’s what counts.

“The race was fun. We are safe and sound and happy.”

Thanks to Lucky Bike for the support, and to everyone who cheered us on. See you at the next one.
